Today in Presidential History: Pierce Edition

Franklin Pierce, born November 23, 1804 in Hillsboro, NH.

Many rank Pierce one of the worst presidents in history (a title that’s up for contention), so why not consider a trip to the Franklin Pierce homestead the next time you’re in the Granite State? And stop by the Pierce barbecue pit while you’re in town.

Located just beyond the famed Kemps Truck “museums” (open exhibit, and can be found on River Street, the first right). The remains of this stone pit were used for Benjamin Pierce’s annual barbecue, and to stage a huge celebration to send Franklin off to Washington.

  1. The quote above about the Pierce Barbecue comes from the Pierce Bicentennial Web Site, but it’s not very accurate. First, the stone structure was an oven above ground, and not a pit. Second, the barbecue in honor of Franklin Pierce was a campaign event held on August 19, 1852, not in February 1853, when he actually went to Washington to prepare for the inauguration in March.
